Actorlympics

Went to watch Actorlympics at The Actors Studio Bangsar yesterday. Went with 2 Inessa's- both from DJ one used to be in their drama team and one used to be in their cheer leading team.

The show was phenomenally hilarious. Side splitting stuff I tell you.

Actorlympics is something like Whose Line Is It Anyway. It's an improv acting show. The actors "go against each other" like in a competition where they try to out-act and out-funny each other in various skits.

What I loved about it was the fact that the audience actually do play a really large role in the show. We as the audience shout out suggestions or scenarios and suggestions of lines they can use and etc.

It was the first time I entered a theatre and the audience didn't have to keep quiet and the lights weren't dimmed down all the way.

Actorlympics has Malaysia's greatest performers making up it's repertoire:

They played games like Questions Only, Three Liners, Malaysian Censorship Board etc.

It was side splitting, hilarious, good-ol'-laughing madness. It was FUN.

But I was also enlightened. On stage, the performers could say whatever they wanted. And they did so freely. They swore like sailors at times, they made jokes about politics, the country, race, religion all of which would normally be censored or entitled yourself a free trip to prison under ISA before you could even say "Pisang".

And it was great. And you could see it in the way they performed the performers loved the freedom of expression and hated oppression. You could see it especially in the Censorship Board skit-- where 5 of the 8 actors played the part of the Malaysian Censorship Board and had the task of censoring a "movie" being played by the other 2 actors.

They censored everything. The first "movie" was Sex and the City-suggested by the audience- was censored by Harith Iskandar before the actors even got a word in. He said and I quote:
"Cannot! Everything also cannot!"

I lost it at the point. Because you could see how much he hated the Board. I laughed my freaking heard off. They all did. They censored men for being women, they censored women not wearing tudung, they censored bad parenting skills. Everything. But the sad truth was. The actual Malaysian Censorship Board actually MIGHT censor those things.

The night's performance was a great one. It was funny from start; though it got a little dry at some parts; it was a splendid night out at the theater.

I recommend everyone go catch it. It's funny plain and simply but its also funny in a deep ironic way.

It's what the government would hate. But what the people would love.

Two thumbs up and a standing ovation from me!
